The Making of Eurovision 2020 – RTBF & Dreamwall & Zero Density
This year, the Eurovision song contest was replaced by a virtual one, with every country performing from home. This definitely did not kill the fun. Dreamwall has delivered a glamorous Eurovision virtual studio for RTBF Entertainment, from their Keywall studios powered by Reality! They went on air twice with the following programmes:
On 14th of May, RTBF’s “Your Top 20″ presented the best Eurovision songs voted by the Belgian audience on social media platforms, providing a pleasant evening on the memory lane.
On the 16th of May was the main event: Eurovision 2020: Shine a Light.
7 Engines were used for both productions. Shows were shot at Keywall studios in Charleroi and virtual set design by Dreamwall. DW team has delivered a glittery, dazzling and creative design supported with spectacular crane movements, capturing impossible angles.
“Eurovision is mainly flakes and lights, this is a show, a kind of really impressive gala show. The virtual set gives the astonishing aspect, very shiny. It allows us to create a particular sympathetic atmosphere for the viewer from the beginning.” Patrick Lauber, Producer at Kaos Production
“I didn’t want to see a virtual set that imitates the real, I preferred having a virtual set designed to send us to imaginary.” Jean Philippe Luxen, RTBF Director
RTBF Belgium has adopted the virtual studio and augmented reality for its sports coverage for the past few years with Dreamwall and Zero Density, however this marked a first time that the channel employed the technology for entertainment. Due to numerous restrictions Covid-19 puts on a production crew, choosing a virtual studio proved both optimal and eventually advantageous on many fronts.
“There is just a need to understand the concept and from there, we have all the tools needed to do anything we want.” Jean Philippe Luxen, RTBF Director
